Fassbinder - welcome to blog

Welcome to my blog!

Here I will write about the films of German filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1945-1982). Stay tuned for my thought on several of his best films.

I have only been watching Fassbinder films for about a year now, but during this first year I have become more and more impressed by his wonderful work. I first learned about Fassbinder's films through American filmmaker and actor Crispin Glover. Since I really appreciate Glover's work and films, I thought it would be very interesting to see some of the films that helped influence his work. So while working my way through a lot of Glover's film recommendations, I naturally came across Fassbinder, and Fassbinder's films are the films that I think I connected with the most.

The first Fassbinder film I saw was Fear eats the soul. Something about this film made me want to see more of Fassbinder's films, and from there on I was hooked. Fear eats the soul is still one of my favourites. I also really like Chinese Roulette, Fox and his friends (which by the way, I think they could have come up with a better translation of the original title "Faustrecht der Freiheit"..... "Fox and his friends" just does not seem like the right choice), and of course my very favourite is without a doubt Berlin Alexanderplatz. This is a true masterpiece and I have watched it several times already.

It is hard to imagine how Fassbinder was able to make so many wonderful and meaningful films during his much too short career. It is a great loss that he died in 1982.. just think of all the films he could have made over the past 30 years since then.
But luckily we have all the films that he did make, and this blog will be dedicated to these films.
